UPDATE 1/15/14: I've reopened my Craftsy pattern shop, but I had to block EU Customers because Craftsy doesn't provide the tools needed to deal with the EU VAT so I've also setup a PatternSpot Shop and there's still AccuQuilt which anyone can buy from! Check them both out and let me know if you have any questions or concerns.
ORIGINAL POST 12/31/14:
Quick update today. Some time around the beginning of December I became aware of the new EU VAT laws on digital sales that are going into effect on January 1st, 2015. These new laws dictate that all digital sales to the EU need to collect the appropriate EU VAT amount based on the location of the customer, verify the customers location with two non-conflicting sources, and retain that information for 10 years. To comply with this, I'd also have to register Crafty Cat Studio in the EU and sign up for the new MOSS system so I can submit quarterly tax returns even if the tax owed is $0. Basically a whole lot of fun I don't want to deal with since I have so few sales to the EU and on top of that, this will spread to EU physical sales as early as 2016 and other countries are planning to do the same like Japan in late 2015 or early 2016.
It has taken all this time (thus the silence on here) to dig into these new rules and figure out what exactly is going on since the information isn't written very clearly and there is a lot of misinformation. I'm still not decided on what I'm going to do with the direction of my business, but for now, I'm taking my patterns down from Craftsy (Contact me if you need a copy of a previously purchased pattern), leaving my one pattern up on AccuQuilt and adding more to AccuQuilt soon. Beyond that, I've been contemplating some big changes in light of this global shift towards taxing internet sales so we'll see where things end up. At the very least, 2015 should be an eventful year!
Happy New Year Everyone!!!!!
