I just got back from a two week vacation cruising the southeastern part of Alaska. I got to explore Icy Strait Point, Ketchikan, Juneau, Skagway, and Vancouver, BC. This was my first time in this area and it was great!
The vacation was a surprise from my husband for our anniversary. We've been talking about going on a trip and he found a great price on back-to-back cruises with Norwegian.
A back-to-back cruise does nearly the same route twice so we had lots of time to explore each port. I'm going to tell you about the highlights of the trip and each port rather than a play by play of the two weeks.
Icy Strait Point
We left out of Whittier in a really rough storm. It was an amazing day and the first time I've actually needed sea sickness pills on a cruise ship. At one point before bedtime the captain came on the PA system to tell everyone that the winds were so strong he wasn't sure we were going to get out of Whittier that night, but he was going to "put the stern to the wind and see how it goes". Well, after a turbulent night we were on our way!
The first main stop was Icy Strait Point and we were very lucky the weather cooperated because we only had one chance to see this amazing place. It was just the perfect mix of cool, cloudy and blue skies that day. We had a great time walking the trail on the island and taking pictures (inspiration for future art quilts). The trail starts in the woods and meanders through a beautifully dense spruce tree forest with ferns, moss, and more all over. Then the trail comes out onto the beach and winds it's way back to the main Cannery buildings.
After our walk, we checked out the Cannery Museum. There were lots of things to read and see, but my favorite was this beautiful vintage industrial Singer sewing machine! I just had to get a picture to share with you all!
We had a wonderful lunch of fantastic Dungeness crab and lobster bisque at <a title="The Crab Station" href="http://icystraitpoint.com/Plan/Diner/4/The-Crab-Station" target="_blank">The Crab Station</a>!
And last, we hit the shops and guess what I found? A brand new quilt shop called HiBearNation! I'll tell you all about it tomorrow!
